Brick Kiln Shiraz 2008

We believe this wine made by our two new winemakers is an excellent product from a difficult year, and is similar in many ways to the great 2005 Brick Kiln. The wine was matured in oak hogsheads (30% new, 20% French) for 18 months before bottling in October 2009. The scent of luscious berries tantalises the nose as one regards the deep purple colour of the wine in glass.

On the palate berry and plum fruit predominate, with hints of licorice, caramel and spicy pepper. The soft fruit tannins reach to the mid palate with a long lasting aftertaste. Recently awarded four stars by Winestate magazine in the April/May issue New Releases report.

Nine Gums Shiraz Grenache 2008 cleanskin

Harvested eight days into the 2008 heatwave, the Nine Gums Vineyard shiraz was co-fermented with 5% Grenache. Meticulous winemaking by Linda Domas resulted in a wine with a higher residual sugar than we would like in a Brick Kiln wine but maintaining the rich berry fruit characteristic of our Willunga vineyard. On opening the bottle there is a slight ìmustinessî, which dissipates with decanting, leaving delicious ripe plum /berry fruit with soft tannins lingering on the front palate. Altogether it is a very satisfactory mid-week/barbecue wine, which at $80.00 per case represents excellent value. A day or so after opening the bottle the wine is better still.

Analysis:

  • Alcohol 15.0%v/v
  • pH 3.50
  • glucose/fructose 2.4g/L
  • Titrable acidity 7.0g/L
  • Price: $78.00 per case

Brick Kiln Shiraz 2007

We have a small amount of the 2007 Brick Kiln remaining for domestic sale.
2007 was a tough vintage in the Vales, and very few McLaren Vale wineries believe that their 2007 shirazes are their best. Still, James Halliday in the 2010 edition of the Wine Companion awarded our wine 90 points, and described it as “Well made; the medium to full bodied palate has a range of blackberry, licorice and dark chocolate flavours supported by fine ripe tannins and vanillin oak; carries its alcohol with ease.”

  • Alcohol 14.1%v/v
  • pH 3.45
  • glucose/fructose 1.4g/L
  • Titrable acid 6.7g/L
  • Price: $130.00 per case.
